RUFUS – Former State Representative Joseph Cooke has been laid to rest following his laying in state at the Mesa State Capitol since August 8. The former Mesa Rep. was found assassinated on August 2 in his Ackland Apartment.

Cooke was honored during his late morning memorial before he was buried on his family farm in Ackland, Mesa. Former State Representative Aaron Schumaker said that he was the friend everyone wanted and needed. Schumaker was a 2014 gubernatorial candidate at the time and said that Cooke was the first person to endorse him.

“Joseph was the friend that you needed and everyone wanted,” said former Rep. Aaron Schumaker. “He cared deeply for his fellow Representatives and for the people he served in the State’s House. He was the first person to endorse me when I ran for Governor in 2014, and he always showed up willing to help anyone who needed it. His lasting legacy is a testament to his willingness to help and willingness to work with anyone, regardless of political party. His death is a loss to this great State and the world.”

Cooke laid in state at the State Capitol starting on Saturday August 8, before he was transferred to his family farm early this afternoon before his memorial service. He was buried at 2:00 PM, and his family thanked the public for their support and prayers.

“It has truly been humbling for the support we received from the public both supporters and non-supporters, and for the many prayers we’ve received,” said the family. “This has been hard on us and Joe’s kids and the kindness and support we’ve received have gotten us through this. It will be a long road ahead, but we thank everyone.”

His burial comes as Federal investigators continue their search for Cooke’s wife Samantha Hope, who is still wanted for questioning. They did confirm that the kids are with their grandparents. The investigation is currently ongoing.
