RUFUS – Senate Minority Leader Larry Cofelt has died at 78 according to his family. Cofelt who has served in the Senate since 2010, worked to ensure the continued protections of vulnerable Jesstopians including the LGBTQ community. His death was announced by his family who say he died at home.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved father Larry who died early this morning. We ask for privacy at this time.” wrote the family in a joint statement.

According to the family there were no obvious signs of any health issues and said that “he was as healthy as possible for a 78-year-old.” Law enforcement were called to Cofelt’s home around 3:00 AM according to reports for “Report of Respiratory Distress.”

A formal investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided as it is released by law enforcement and investigation officials. As of now his death is not being ruled as suspicious, but a full autopsy will be performed per statutory requirements due to the office he held.
