RUFUS – Law enforcement have responded to shots fired around the DHS headquarters in Rufus, and reports are also saying DHS Secretary Marcus Welder was shot. Unconfirmed reports of his status are saying that he was shot in the chest and head.
The shooting occurred a little after 1:30 this afternoon, and law enforcement began searching for the shooter. Welder’s true condition is unknown at this time as officials scramble for answers and work to find the shooter.
“We are now investigating the shooting of Department Of Homeland Security Secretary Marcus Welder,” said Deputy DHS Secretary Patrick Wheat. “We know that the shooter was in the crowd that Welder was speaking to, but we don’t know who it was. We are going to be looking at every possible angle, because there is no reason why he was shot. I am angry that we are still dealing with political violence, even after last month’s assassination attempt.”
The Federal Crimes Investigation and Homeland Security will be investigating the shooting and will push all of its resources to find the shooter. The FCIS, and leaders around the country have condemned the shooting, citing the continued political violence that has been perpetrated against Republicans.
“We are obviously in the early stages of this investigation so we don’t have very many details at this time,” said FCIS Director Barry Wilkenson. “We will continue to provide updates as the investigation unfolds, but we send our prayers to DHS Secretary Marcus Welder and his family.”
