RUFUS – The shooter, suspected of trying to shoot and kill President Jay Laylin called his family after 5:45 AM, according to the family. The shooter’s identity has now been released by Federal authorities. 22 year old Evan Alvarez, is the shooters identity.
According to the family, he sounded frantic during the call, and had mentioned hiding out somewhere. The family said they pleaded with him to give himself up before the phone line disconnected. Federal authorities will be using tracing methods to find the location of his phone.
“The family of Evan Alvarez called us to inform us that he had called them frantically to find a place to hide,” said PPS Director Gerald McFarland. “They told him to turn himself in, and they said that if he would show up, they would call us. We expect that they will fully cooperate with us. The shooter is still on the loose and we ask that you keep your distance. The family told us that he suffers from mental illness.”
The Presidential Protective Service and Federal Crimes Investigation say that they will continue to deploy agents to the areas where he was last seen. According to officials, he did not disclose where he was located, and agents are currently working to find his GPS location.
“We are close to capturing our suspect,” said FCIS Director Barry Wilkenson. “His family confirmed that he was on the run and admitted to trying to assassinate President Laylin. He is on the run and we are close to tracking him down. The family is cooperating with us, and we are hoping to have him in custody by the end of the day today, if possible.”
